Big Lots is being acquired by affiliate Nexus Capital Management LP, and the sale is expected to be finalized by the fourth quarter of 2024.
Big Lots is closing an additional 19 stores as the company continues to navigate through Chapter 11 bankruptcy, court documents show.
Big Lots announced in September that the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and planned on closing more than 340 stores. The closures are occurring due to affiliate Nexus Capital Management LP acquiring Big Lots as part of a sale agreement, the retailer said in a news release.
“Though most of our stores are profitable, and we are taking every step possible to improve the profitability of all our stores, we will need to close certain locations to ensure that our business operates efficiently and we can continue serving our customers,” according to the retailer.
In October, Big Lots closed 50 additional stores across the United States. Although the stores are closing, the retailer filed motions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware to continue paying and providing benefits to employees, as well as sending payments to important vendors so it can continue to run the business.
The sale to Nexus is expected to be final by the fourth quarter of 2024, and the agreement includes $707.5 million of financing, with $35 million coming from some of Big Lots’ current lenders.
