Late fees start on congestion pricing tolls soon

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Make sure you’re paying your tolls on time – the grace period for New York City’s congestion pricing program ends Wednesday.

The toll charged for entering Manhattan under 60th Street must be paid within 30 days, or drivers will face a $5 late fee. If the toll goes unpaid for 60 days, the late fee increases to $50, according to the MTA.

The late fees apply to tolls sent by mail, which are already more expensive than E-ZPass charges.

If you drive through a congestion pricing toll with an E-ZPass account balance below zero, you may receive a more expensive toll in the mail that needs to be paid within 30 days to avoid the late charge. For more information on driving through a toll with an E-ZPass account balance below zero, click here.

Congestion pricing rolled out on Jan. 5, charging drivers with E-ZPasses up to $9 to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street. In the program’s first 60 days, all additional fees were waived. That initial 60-day grace period ends Wednesday.

The federal government pulled its approval of congestion pricing in February, but Gov. Kathy Hochul said the traffic cameras will remain on. The MTA has initiated legal action to keep the tolling system going.
